What’s happening in San Diego:
- Lights Out, San Diego! is a campaign to build awareness about how light pollution impacts migrating birds and other wildlife. San Diego is located on the Pacific Flyway and every year during the fall and spring migration seasons, millions of birds fly over San Diego every night. The San Diego Audubon Society is encouraging everyone to turn off non-essential lighting from the hours of 11 p.m to 6 a.m during the migration season to provide darker skies for these nocturnal migrants. Bird of the Month: Bushtit
Fun Facts About Bushtits:
- They are a non-migratory, year-round resident throughout their range.
- They eat oil sunflower, sunflower chips, mealworms, peanuts in the shell, peanut pieces, suet blends and Bark Butter®
- They nest in trees and bushes - will not use a nest box.
- The male and female have similar plumage with the male having a dark eye and the female’s light (cream, yellow, or white). No seasonal plumage changes. Juvenile plumage similar to adults.
- They are the only member of their family in the Americas; seven other species are found in Eurasia. All have similar complex hanging nests.*
- A breeding pair often has helpers at the nest that aid in raising the nestlings. This already rare behavior is made more unusual by the fact that the helpers are typically adult males.*
- For most breeding birds, only one adult at a time sleeps on the nest, but all Bushtit family members sleep together in their large, hanging nest during the breeding season. Once the young fledge, they all leave the nest and thereafter sleep on branches.*
- Bushtits are social birds that live year-round in flocks of 10 to 40 birds.*
